Why do we need to heat treat some springs?
In the manufacturing process of mechanical springs, high tensile residual stresses are generated which reduces considerably the spring strength and service life. These unfavourable residual stresses are partially eliminated by the heat treatment. In the process, the spring is heated below the material transformation temperature.
Is the Colombi patented heat treatment method equivalent to the conventional furnace heat treatment?
This question was raised by many in and outside the company. Worlds leading stainless steel wire manufacturer SANDVIK was contacted to test and evaluate this unique method of heat treating a spring. Below you can find the technical report with the results. Since launching of the product in the 1970´s none of the several hundred delivered heating units have been returned.
